Two weeks ago, the autumnal equinox passed—which means we’ve officially made it to Fall. This time of year packs a crisp punch in the writings of American-coded celebrations: football Sundays, leaf peeping hikes, and pumpkin spice everything. We may or may not have Gilmore Girls on in the background. If fall is your favorite season, we totally get it. A return to cooler weather means warmer clothes: aka sweater weather (our personal fav.)
To help pinpoint your autumn wardrobe essentials, we did some digging into this year's fall fashion trends, and the trending palette might surprise you. Traditionally, the sweaters of this season look similar to that of the changing leaves: an array of warm neutrals. This year, however, we noticed something a little brighter. While pumpkin spice outfits are still on trend, there is a new, more vibrant sweater selection en vogue.
From cashmeres to crewnecks: colorful knitwear is making its way onto the scene. Whether your style leans simple and elegant or loud and eclectic, we found the best options for incorporating a little color into your wardrobe. Find inspiration for your fall outfit ideas with our favorite colorful knitwear picks below.

The Great, The Camp Lodge Cardigan—$395
This embroidered cardigan takes cozy cabin wear to a new level. While we don’t typically go for straight-up granola, this sweater fits squarely in our comfort space of “granola curious.” For a relaxed fit, the brand recommends sizing up.
Guest in Residence, Oversized Crew—$345
Gigi Hadid caught our attention with her cashmere ski collection last year, and she kept our attention with the fall color pop collection this year. We love the hue of this, dare we say, cerulean blue.
Mango, Striped Polo Neck Sweater—$80
Welcome the return of classic American prep style with this pink striped rugby top from Mango. This straight design shirt pairs perfectly with a matching striped knitted skirt for a chic co-ord option.
Reformation, Teo Cashmere Short Sleeve Sweater—$128
Who said sweaters have to have sleeves? Build a layerable look with this fitted short sleeve cashmere shirt from Reformation.
Madewell, Tipped V-Neck Oversized Sweater—$110
While this knit isn’t all-over color, the blue pop around the collar is enough to scratch our itch for a vibrant sweater. Inspired by vintage varsity wear, this shirt is intended to be an oversized, boxy fit. The contrast styles well with neutrals or rainbows, making it a versatile addition to any closet.
Alex Mill, Betty Turtleneck in Wool—$175
Incorporating color doesn’t have to mean neglecting the fall classics either. Opt for this evergreen turtleneck to seamlessly blend old and new fall fashion trends.
La Ligne, Marin Striped Wool and Cashmere-Blend Sweater—$295
Want to dip your toe into the ever popular buttercream color trend? Give it a whirl with this yellow striped cashmere blend from La Ligne.
Ciao Lucia, Brolio Pullover Denim—$395
For the quiet luxury fans who want a more subtle look, we’re loving denim colored pullover from Ciao Lucia. With a chunky collar and notch sleeves, this merino wool sweater is an elevated take on a fall classic.
Kule, The Raven—$298
Sometimes that summer heat sneaks its way into autumn and we’re forced to layer with caution. Mornings may be delightfully brisk, but those afternoons are still scorchers. When adding a thick knit isn’t feasible, reach for this crocheted cardigan from Kule.
Free People, Lila Cardi—$98
Cropped, textured, and bright red, this top from Free People is the cardigan equivalent of a bold lip. Wear it over a tee or tank, or even on its own.
Faherty, Jackson Sweater Polo—$158
Crafted from softly textured yarn, this sweater polo brings a chic yet relaxed look to any autumn outfit. Dress it up with a silk dress or skirt, or dress it down with jeans; either way, you’ll look great.
Cos, Oversized Wool Neck Cardigan—$135
Made from Responsible Wool Standard-certified wool, this chunky, oversized cardigan from Cos is a cozy knit you’ll return to all season long. We love the soft blue hue that makes this button down so unique.
Guest in Residence, Rugby Shirt—$495
This oh-so-popular rugby shirt from Guest in Residence is already sold out, but we have high hopes for its return. Don’t let the name of this shirt fool you. While the design is giving 100 percent rugby, like all other GIR (Guest in Residence) pieces, the top is made from 100 percent cashmere.
